SINGAPORE - Domestic travel interest in Indonesia has surged more than fourfold ahead of the country's Independence Day long weekend, with travellers increasingly looking beyond traditional holiday hotspots for nature-based and short-drive escapes. According to travel platform Agoda, search interest for domestic accommodation and travel during the 15–17 August holiday period has increased by more than four times compared with the corresponding period last year.

Bandung, Yogyakarta and Bali remain the most searched destinations, while emerging destinations in West Java are recording some of the fastest growth as Indonesians look for accessible, affordable and less congested alternatives.

Agoda's top 10 domestic destinations for Indonesia's 2026 Independence Day long weekend are Bandung, Yogyakarta, Bali, Jakarta, Puncak, Malang, Pangandaran, Anyer, Bogor and Garut. Bandung took the top position, benefiting from its proximity to Jakarta and its combination of cultural, historical and culinary attractions. Among the city's landmarks are Gedung Sate, the Monumen Bandung Lautan Api and Gedung Merdeka.

Yogyakarta ranked second, continuing to attract domestic visitors with its heritage attractions, cultural experiences and family-friendly destinations, including Benteng Vredeburg, Gedung Agung and Monumen Jogja Kembali. Bali, meanwhile, retained its position as Indonesia's leading leisure destination, appealing to travellers looking for beaches, resorts and a more conventional holiday experience.

Jakarta ranked fourth, with travel interest increasing almost threefold. The capital is expected to remain a focal point for Independence Day celebrations while also drawing visitors with its museums, culinary scene, shopping and staycation offerings.

Nature destinations post strongest growth

The biggest increases in travel searches were recorded among several regional destinations in West Java, highlighting a growing appetite for short breaks centred on nature and outdoor experiences.

Pangandaran recorded more than a tenfold increase in travel interest, while Anyer saw searches rise more than ninefold. Garut recorded nearly an 8.5-fold increase.

The three destinations offer a combination of beaches, rivers, mountains, volcanic landscapes and local culinary experiences, making them particularly suited to families and travellers seeking shorter road trips from major population centres.

The trend could also point to a broader shift in domestic tourism, with travellers balancing the appeal of established destinations against the cost, congestion and travel time associated with longer holidays.

Cool-weather escapes remain popular

Cooler destinations in and around West Java and East Java also recorded strong growth. Puncak, Malang and Bogor experienced increases of between four and five times in travel interest, according to Agoda's search data. Their relatively easy accessibility, cooler climates and family-oriented attractions make them popular choices for Indonesians looking for a quick break without travelling too far.

Malang, in particular, offers a mix of amusement parks, zoos, museums and outdoor attractions, broadening its appeal across different age groups. Gede Gunawan, Senior Country Director, Indonesia at Agoda, said the fourfold increase in travel interest demonstrated the eagerness of Indonesians to use the Independence Day holiday to spend time with family and friends.

“While iconic destinations like Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Bali remain enduring favorites, it's also exciting to see rising travel interest to alternative getaways such as Pangandaran, Garut, and Anyer,” he said.

Gunawan said these destinations were attracting travellers looking for places that were close to major cities, more affordable, less congested and capable of offering different types of travel experiences. With Indonesia's Independence Day falling on 17 August, the long weekend is expected to provide another boost for domestic tourism, particularly for destinations within driving distance of the country's major urban centres.

Agoda said travellers can access more than six million holiday properties, over 130,000 flight routes and more than 300,000 experiences through its platform.
