Thai travellers are increasingly turning marathon weekends into international holidays, with Agoda data showing sharp increases in accommodation searches for major races in Seoul, Japan and Bangkok and signalling a wider shift towards sports and wellness driven travel across Asia.

Asia's marathon boom turns races into cross border run-cations
Runners take to the streets during an Asian marathon, as the growing “run-cation” trend combines competitive sport, wellness and international travel.

Marathons are increasingly becoming a reason to travel rather than simply an event to compete in, with Thai runners showing growing interest in building international holidays around major races across Asia. Data from digital travel platform Agoda shows accommodation searches by Thai travellers rose significantly around three major marathon weekends in 2026, highlighting the emergence of the “run-cation” as fitness, wellness and travel increasingly converge.

The strongest increase was recorded for the JTBC Seoul Marathon, scheduled for Nov 1, where accommodation searches from Thai travellers rose 73 per cent compared with the same period in 2025. The Seoul race is one of South Korea's major road running events, taking participants through central Seoul and past landmarks including Deoksugung Palace and Gwanghwamun Square before finishing at Jamsil Olympic Stadium.

The Mt Fuji International Marathon, taking place from Dec 12 to 13 near Tokyo, also attracted rising interest from Thai travellers. Accommodation searches for the race weekend increased 41 per cent year on year, putting Thailand among the three markets showing the strongest search interest during the event.

Akaporn Rodkong, Country Director, Thailand and Indochina at Agoda, said: "Marathons used to be a solo pursuit, but are now becoming the centerpiece of a trip for some travelers. Thai travelers are among the most active across the region's top races, and that reflects a broader appetite for travel built around personal goals and wellness, not just sightseeing. At Agoda, we want to make it easy and accessible for these race enthusiasts to find the right place to stay, however far the finish line is from home".

The race combines competitive running with a tourism proposition, taking runners around Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Saiko with views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding autumn landscape. Interest is also rising in Thailand's own major event. Accommodation searches by Thai travellers for the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok, scheduled for Nov 28 and 29, increased 19 per cent compared with 2025.

The Bangkok race follows a point to point route through the capital, beginning at MBK Center and finishing near the Grand Palace while passing landmarks including Lumpini Park, Victory Monument and Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

While domestic Thai travellers remain the largest source of interest for the Bangkok event, Agoda said the race is also attracting runners from the Philippines, Singapore, Japan and Taiwan, indicating that Bangkok is developing a stronger international marathon profile.

The pattern across the three races suggests that competitive running is becoming part of a broader travel experience. Instead of travelling simply to participate in a race, runners are increasingly combining competition with sightseeing, leisure and wellness activities.

For Asian destinations, the trend creates an opportunity to position major sporting events as tourism products that can attract visitors beyond the traditional spectator market. Akaporn Rodkong, country director, Thailand and Indochina at Agoda, said marathons were increasingly becoming the centrepiece of trips for some travellers, reflecting a broader appetite for travel built around personal goals and wellness.

The development also points to the growing commercial potential of sports tourism in Asia, as destinations compete not only for athletes but also for accompanying family members, supporters and travellers extending their stays around major events.

With marathon calendars increasingly connecting major Asian cities, races in Seoul, Tokyo region and Bangkok are becoming part of a regional sporting travel circuit, giving runners another reason to cross borders and combine personal fitness goals with exploration.
