Selangor Men’s Foil Team Honoured After Double Gold Triumph at SUKMA 2026
Selangor’s Men’s foil fencing team has been recognised with an additional victory incentive after completing a memorable double gold triumph at SUKMA 2026, capping a remarkable rise for the state’s fencing programme from podium contenders to national champions.
SERI KEMBANGAN — Selangor’s Men’s foil fencing team has received an additional victory incentive following its outstanding double gold medal performance at SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026, adding another chapter to the state contingent’s historic campaign on home soil.
The quartet of Heng Yu Shern, Jonas Goh, Saif Nordin and Muhammad Arif Fitri were recognised following a remarkable showing that saw Selangor dominate the Men’s foil competition in both the individual and team events.
The presentation of the additional incentive by Selangor SUKMA Chef de Mission YB Abbas Salimmi Che Adzmi, better known as YB Abbas Azmi, came as part of the wider recognition for athletes who helped deliver one of the most successful fencing campaigns in the state's history.
Speaking to the athletes, YB Abbas Azmi who is also the Seri Serdang state assemblyman congratulated the team on its success, describing their achievement as part of a historic sporting campaign for the state. He noted that Selangor's triumph at SUKMA 2026 was followed by another overall championship victory at Para SUKMA, completing a memorable double for the home contingent.
He also paid tribute to the coaches, members of the Selangor Amateur Fencing Association (SAFA) Exco who had helped make the success possible, while taking time to acknowledge the parents whose sacrifices and commitment behind the scenes, he said, had not gone unnoticed. Selangor emerged overall champion in both SUKMA and Para SUKMA, completing a historic double for the state.
The double gold on home soil for the Selangor men’s foil team was among the standout performers of the Games. Heng Yu Shern captured the individual Men’s foil gold medal before joining Jonas Goh, Saif Nordin and Muhammad Arif Fitri to secure gold in the team competition.
The two victories represented a clean sweep of the Men’s foil events for Selangor and demonstrated the strength of a squad that combined individual quality with the discipline and tactical understanding required for team competition.
The home-grown Selangor foil team improved on their performance from the last SUKMA in 2023 which brought home two bronze medals (together with two silvers from other weapons) in the Sarawak edition of the biannual games. Selangor has seen a marked improvement in the development of the sport in the last 2 years. A case in point being two of the SUKMA gold medal team members were also part of the SEA Games team which brought home silver from Bangkok last year.
The additional incentive presented today reflects a broader commitment by the Selangor state government to reward athletes for their achievements at SUKMA and Para SUKMA.
Selangor emerged as overall champion of SUKMA XXII 2026 with 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals, surpassing its original target of 80 gold medals and recording its best performance since first hosting the Games 28 years ago. The victory marked Selangor's 10th overall SUKMA title.
The success was followed by another major achievement when Selangor was crowned overall champion of Para SUKMA 2026, collecting 93 gold, 55 silver and 52 bronze medals. The twin championships underlined the depth of Selangor's sporting development and gave the state one of its most significant sporting moments in recent history.
The fencing team's achievement was also supported by Selangor's wider athlete development ecosystem, which included MSN Selangor, Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd, Aquasel and additional support from Yayasan MBI. The SUKMA campaign also highlighted the contribution of clubs and coaches to Selangor's sporting success, with high-performance athletes benefiting from long term training programmes, international training exposure and competitive preparation before taking to the national stage.
The challenge now will be to convert the momentum created by the historic home Games into sustained success.
Selangor's SUKMA and Para SUKMA double has created a powerful benchmark for the state's sporting programme. For the Men’s foil team, the double gold triumph offers both recognition for what has been achieved and a platform for what could come next.
As Selangor looks beyond its historic 2026 campaign, the message from the state's sporting leadership is increasingly clear: national success should be the beginning of the journey, not the destination.
