International Elite Field Set for 2026 Dili International Marathon
Elite runners from across ASEAN+, Australian Defence Force personnel and regional digital influencers will line up alongside Timorese athletes at the 2026 Dili International Marathon as Timor-Leste strengthens the event's international profile ahead of its ASEAN Chairmanship ambitions.
DILI – Timor-Leste will welcome an expanded field of international elite runners, Australian Defence Force personnel and regional content creators for the 2026 Dili International Marathon, reinforcing the country's ambition to establish the event as one of Southeast Asia's emerging international road races.
The organisers have confirmed that elite athletes from Portugal, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia will compete alongside Timorese national squad runners in the marathon and half marathon events on 8 August. A six-member Australian Defence Force contingent will also participate, highlighting the growing international character of the annual race.
Regional influencers from Indonesia and Australia will join the programme, sharing the event with audiences across Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific. Organisers believe the initiative will help showcase Timor-Leste's sporting culture, tourism attractions and hospitality to a wider international audience.
The elite field has been deliberately assembled to reflect the country's growing regional engagement, with organisers describing the marathon as an opportunity to bring together athletes from across ASEAN and its regional partners in the spirit of friendship and sporting excellence.
"When the runners line up on Saturday 8 August, the field on Dili's avenue will look the way we want the Dili International Marathon to look – Timorese, Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Australian, Melanesian, Portuguese and friends from across the region, running together," Event Director Sean Borrell said.
The 2026 edition will feature a full marathon, half marathon, 10km para-athlete race and a 5km community fun run, with race week running from 4 to 8 August. Organisers have also confirmed that this year's event will carry the environmental theme "Love Our Forests and Wildlife", linking sport with conservation and sustainability initiatives.
In addition to the races, the DIM EXPO will showcase Timorese culture, local businesses and community organisations, encouraging visitors to experience more of the country beyond race day. The expanded programme reflects a growing trend among international sporting events to combine elite competition with tourism, culture and destination marketing.
First held in 2010, the Dili International Marathon has grown into Timor-Leste's flagship mass participation sporting event and has become an important part of the country's independence commemorations. The event continues to attract increasing international participation while promoting healthy lifestyles, community engagement and regional cooperation through sport.
