Georgia and WHO reaffirm commitment to stronger healthcare partnership
President Mikheil Kavelashvili and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation, highlighting Georgia's healthcare reforms, public health achievements and growing role in advancing global health initiatives.
TBILISI – Georgia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) following a high level meeting between President Mikheil Kavelashvili and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The meeting reviewed the long standing cooperation between Georgia and the WHO, with both sides discussing opportunities to further expand collaboration across the country's healthcare sector. The discussions focused on the progress of healthcare reforms undertaken with WHO support and the shared ambition to continue building a resilient, accessible and modern health system.
President Kavelashvili acknowledged the WHO's role in supporting key reforms that have transformed Georgia's healthcare landscape. These include the development of the country's universal healthcare system, the implementation of primary healthcare reforms, improvements to pharmaceutical policy and efforts to strengthen public health preparedness and capacity.
The two leaders also highlighted several of Georgia's recent public health milestones. Among the achievements recognised were the country's malaria-free status, expanded access to innovative medicines and continued progress in digital healthcare, reflecting Georgia's commitment to improving healthcare delivery through technology and innovation.
Georgia's growing contribution to global health governance was also emphasised during the meeting. The country currently serves on the WHO Executive Board and co-chairs the Group of Friends for Universal Health Coverage, underscoring its increasing role in shaping international health policy and promoting equitable access to healthcare worldwide.
Both President Kavelashvili and Dr Tedros reaffirmed their readiness to deepen cooperation in the years ahead, with a focus on strengthening Georgia's healthcare system, implementing internationally recognised standards and supporting joint initiatives that contribute to global health security and universal health coverage.
The meeting reinforced the importance of sustained international collaboration in addressing evolving healthcare challenges and ensuring stronger, more resilient health systems for the future.
