Malaysia Ranks Third in Global Student Growth
Malaysia has emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing international education destinations, recording 70% growth in international student enrolment over five years and ranking third among 14 major study destinations, according to ICEF Insights 2027.
Malaysia is strengthening its position as a global education hub, ranking third among 14 major international study destinations for growth in foreign student enrolment, according to the latest ICEF Insights 2027 report.
The report places Malaysia among the world's "Big 14" study destinations, highlighting its growing appeal as international students increasingly look beyond traditional education markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.
Malaysia recorded 70% growth in international student numbers over five years, alongside a 16% increase in the latest reporting year. Both figures placed the country third among the 14 destinations examined, outperforming all four traditional study destinations across both measurement periods.
The report recorded 159,100 international students in Malaysia as of December 2025, while the country currently hosts more than 170,000 international students.
Malaysia's inclusion was highlighted during ICEF Berlin 2026, held from 1 to 3 November, where Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) Chief Executive Officer Novie Tajuddin led the Malaysian delegation alongside representatives from five Malaysian higher education institutions.
Tajuddin said the achievement reflected the collective efforts of the country's higher education institutions in delivering quality education, developing international partnerships and providing a positive student experience.
She added that the continued commitment of universities, supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and industry partners, was strengthening international confidence in Malaysia as a preferred study destination.
China remains Malaysia's largest source market for international students, accounting for 62,200 enrolments, an increase of 11%. Indonesia followed with 13,000 students, up 13%, while Bangladesh contributed 11,400 students, representing growth of 29%.
India recorded 6,200 students, an increase of 15%, while Pakistan accounted for 6,000 students, up 20%.
Malaysia's appeal is supported by its combination of internationally recognised education programmes, relatively affordable tuition and living costs, and a safe, multicultural environment. The widespread use of English in higher education also provides international students with access to a broad range of academic programmes.
Tajuddin said EMGS would continue working with higher education institutions and partners to ensure that growing international interest was matched by a positive student experience, including clearer information, streamlined student pass applications and assistance from the moment students arrive in the country.
Malaysia's efforts to strengthen its international student offering have also received recognition for its arrival and support services. In September 2026, the EMGS International Student Arrival Centre (ISAC) received the Student Support Award at The PIEoneer Awards 2026 in London.
The centre was selected ahead of seven other finalists from Canada, Singapore and the United Kingdom, including the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).
Operating around the clock at Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Terminals 1 and 2, ISAC assists international students before immigration clearance, guiding them through arrival procedures and providing support as they begin their studies in Malaysia.
EMGS, an agency under the Ministry of Higher Education, is responsible for promoting Malaysia as an international education destination and facilitating the movement of foreign students into the country's higher education system, including student pass processing.
