Exchange 106, the 454-metre landmark at Kuala Lumpur’s Tun Razak Exchange, is set to become Malaysia’s first fully 5G-enabled supertall skyscraper, with more than 900 antennas planned across the tower under a collaboration with U Mobile and EdgePoint Towers.

KUALA LUMPUR: Exchange 106, the 454-metre landmark at the heart of the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) International Financial Centre, is set to become Malaysia’s first fully 5G-enabled supertall skyscraper under a new collaboration with U Mobile and EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd.

The project, scheduled to go live in phases from the fourth quarter of 2026, will introduce purpose-built In-Building Coverage (IBC) infrastructure across 453,885 square metres of the tower.

The development reflects the growing importance of digital connectivity as part of corporate real estate infrastructure, particularly as businesses increasingly depend on cloud computing, real-time data analytics, connected devices and other high-bandwidth applications.

Exchange 106 Chief Executive Officer Faris Najhan Hashim said connectivity had become a fundamental requirement for modern enterprises rather than an additional workplace feature.

“Our tenants are scaling their digital operations, relying heavily on cloud computing, real-time data analytics, and IoT ecosystems,” he said.

By integrating 5G infrastructure into the building, Exchange 106 aims to provide a future-ready environment for companies requiring high-capacity and low-latency connectivity.

U Mobile will provide its ULTRA5G network for the development, with the collaboration also supporting enterprise applications such as smart parking, access control and Internet of Things (IoT) systems.

U Mobile Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen said the deployment would strengthen indoor connectivity for businesses operating within the high-density environment.

The infrastructure will be designed and deployed by EdgePoint Towers, which plans to install more than 900 antennas across the tower, including coverage within lifts and car parks.

EdgePoint Towers Chief Executive Officer Muniff Kamaruddin said the project demonstrated how telecommunications infrastructure could increasingly be integrated into major commercial developments.

The scale of the system reflects the anticipated population density and connectivity requirements of the tower, which is home to a significant community of international businesses.

Exchange 106 said around 90% of its tenants are international companies, including Fortune 500 companies and businesses operating across the financial and technology sectors.

The 5G deployment adds another layer to TRX's positioning as Malaysia's international financial centre, where digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to companies selecting locations for regional operations and headquarters.

For Exchange 106, the project is also intended to strengthen the building's proposition as a corporate address capable of supporting increasingly digital and connected workplaces.

The phased deployment is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
