CityUHK Reaches Historic High in Global University Rankings
City University of Hong Kong has reached a historic high of 70th globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, adding to its strong performance across major international university rankings.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has reached a historic high in the global university rankings, climbing to 70th place worldwide in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.

The latest result places CityUHK among the world’s leading higher education institutions and marks another milestone in the university’s continuing international rise.

The university has built its global profile around research, innovation and internationalisation, with programmes spanning science and engineering, business, data science, law, humanities, creative media, energy and environmental studies, veterinary medicine and life sciences.

The ranking achievement comes as CityUHK continues to strengthen its research and international partnerships. The university has more than 20,000 students from 80 countries and regions and maintains more than 400 exchange partnerships across more than 40 countries and regions.

CityUHK's recent performance in other major global rankings has also highlighted its research strength. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, released in June, the university rose 11 places to 52nd globally among more than 1,500 institutions. It was also ranked second worldwide for Citations per Faculty and first in Asia and Hong Kong for the indicator.

The university has positioned research and innovation as central to its contribution to Hong Kong's wider economic development. Its research agenda increasingly focuses on translating scientific and technological discoveries into applications with potential social and economic impact.

CityUHK said its international outlook is also reflected in its academic community, with international faculty accounting for about 70 per cent of its academic staff. The university has also set a target of providing more than 65 per cent of students with overseas or internship opportunities.

The latest ranking milestone comes at a time when Hong Kong is seeking to reinforce its position as an international education and innovation centre. CityUHK has said it intends to deepen interdisciplinary research and industry-academia collaboration while expanding partnerships with institutions in mainland China and overseas.

The university's recent rankings performance also reflects the importance of research impact in its international positioning. Its second-place global position for Citations per Faculty in the 2027 QS rankings placed it behind only Harvard University on that indicator. (City

For CityUHK, the 70th-place result therefore represents more than a numerical improvement. It provides another international benchmark for an institution seeking to connect higher education, scientific research, talent development and innovation with Hong Kong's wider economic ambitions.
